Scientific Associate

Prof. Andrew Zalesky currently holds a NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship. He is ranked in the top-1% most cited researchers worldwide in his field (Clarivate Analytics, Highly Cited Researchers 2018, 2019 & 2020).

Dr Zalesky is internationally recognised as a leader in the highly competitive field of brain connectomics. The tools that he has developed used worldwide. His Network Based Statistics tool has been used in 1000+ published studies to map brain circuits associated with disease and identify candidate circuits for targeted therapies.

In 2019, he was voted one of Australia’s top-30 most innovative biomedical engineers by Engineers Australia. He has established unique and innovative research linkages between Engineering and Medicine and leads a team of neuroscientists and biomedical engineers. He is an investigator on two NHMRC-funded clinical trials aiming to evaluate individualisation of brain stimulation therapies.

“My work aims to understand why, how and when interactions between systems in the brain break down or fail to develop properly in people with mental illness. Our goal is use this knowledge to engineer improved treatments for serious psychiatric disorders.”
